Mission
The Data Warehouse is home to the University’s historical data about our institution, also known as the Decision Support Database (DSD). The historical data tables are “frozen” or extracted from other UA information systems at specific points in time. Our mission is to provide the UA community with the consistent, static data tables which serve as the foundation for the various needs of institutional reporting. The Data Warehouse is guided by the Institutional Research Shared Services Leadership Team.
Scheduled Data Freezes
Freeze dates for the upcoming year are set in coordination with key data stewards in each data area, the IR Directors and OIT.
Here is a full listing of the confirmed 26-27 freeze dates.
Each of the data freezes consist of two processes:
- A data extract - raw data is exported from Banner production at approximately 5:00 pm.
- DSD table load - 1-3 days afterward, the custom summary tables are generated in the DSDMGR schema (aka Decision Support Database).
Once the Data Warehouse freeze tables are finalized and ready to use, notifications
are sent to the Google Group ua-data-warehouse@alaska.edu. UA personnel may visit
and sign up to receive notifications. UA personnel with specific business data needs
may also request access to the Data Warehouse via OIT Banner access request forms.

Student data freezes occur nine times per year and include enrollment numbers, course registration activity, demographics, and much more.
Open freezes are approximately three weeks after the start of the semester following the course add/drop deadline. (The summer semester does not have an open freeze. )
Census freezes are aligned to national IPEDS Census dates and occur four times per year.
Closing freezes are approximately three weeks after the end of a semester (not including holiday breaks) following the faculty grade deadline.

Human Resource freezes occur four times per year, each Fall and Spring semester and twice in Summer.
The HR freezes include personnel data such as employee and faculty assignment info, job classifications, demographics, and more.

The Financial Aid year ends on September 30 and begins on October 1. This means that in October, the
financial aid data is frozen once to conlcude the aid year that is closing (Final),
then again to initiate the tables for the new, upcoming aid year (Early/Preliminary).
A freeze of intermediate data is also taken in July (Late).
Financial aid data includes FAFSA data, totals of aid dollars awarded, and various sources of scholarships and financial aid.

The Research freeze occurs twice per year following the close of the fiscal year and the summer
semester.
Research tables contain data on the University's various grant-funded and capital research expenditures, research themes, and the revenue generated as a result of the research.
